What is good beginner snake?

I want something that is friendly or at least doesn't mind being held. I'm looking for something that doesn't get to big. Pythons and bigger are sadly out of the question. I don't want to have to feed it live bait unless its bugs. I wouldn't mind feeding it frozen pinkies as I've heard its better for them anyways. I have a 55 gallon tank so would it be possible to have 2 in there? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
