Good answers above on the whole Christians were actively persecuted in the days of the Roman Empire.(especially under Emperors Diocletion and Marcus Auralius.) Martrydom was common, since most Christians were slaves and found the prospect of a better life in heaven preferable to the type of existance that recanting would allow.
